An innovative tool for fraud prevention in the organic pasta supply chain - Pilot workshops series

Federica Tesini of Alce Nero presents on the organic pasta food supply chain to a room full of attendees.

On 3 April 2025, the workshop “ALLIANCE: An innovative tool for fraud prevention in the organic pasta supply chain” was held at the Alce Nero headquarters in Castel San Pietro (BO), presenting the results of the pilot demonstrator on rapid pesticide detection in organic pasta to stakeholders working in the pasta supply chain.

The workshop was jointly organised by the Italian partners of the ALLIANCE project: organic farming and processing company Alce Nero SpA, organing consulting FederBio Servizi srl, University of Bologna - Department of Agricultural and Food Sciences) and the Italian Confederation of Farmers of Umbria (CIA-Umbria), and it was part of a series of workshops aimed at presenting the pilot developments to the relevant communities of stakeholders.

The main objective of the workshop was to present the preliminary results of the pilot demonstrator led by Alce Nero and technically supported by FederBio Servizi, which is testing a system capable of combining the analysis of various sources of real data (data from IoT sensors installed in durum wheat fields, data processed by an AI tool that uses satellite images for the vegetation index, and data from multi-residual analysis of the finished product and raw material). This integrated analysis different types of data can give the operators of the organic pasta supply chain the possibility to use a single digital tool (“rapid fingerprint”) in order to better manage the supply chain with a view to fraud prevention. This tool offers wide margins for commercial development, and can provide an added value for fraud prevention in the organic pasta food supply chain.

An audience of 30 participants - including companies in the Alce Nero supply chain, certification bodies, agronomic consultants, and researchers - listened with great interest to the presentations of the results (albeit still partial) of this pilot demonstrator. Additionally, other speakers gave an overview of the current developments regarding the regulatory framework for organic products, and the tools available to organic pasta operators to prevent fraud.
