Demonstration of traceability and authenticity in the olive supply chain
This pilot aims to ensure olive oil authenticity, focusing on protecting autochthonous olive varieties from adulteration, substitution of cheaper oils and misrepresentation of varieties. These issues arise from complex genetic relationships among olive cultivars and confusion caused by local naming practices, leading to the misidentification of varieties. Precise methods for varietal identification using DNA analysis address the lack of reliable markers for specific olive varieties, enabling the miniaturization of analysis and ensuring compliance with international standards, such as those of the International Olive Council. The pilot integrates portable DNA technology with blockchain to securely trace olive varieties through unique Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs). This approach prevents adulteration and ensures supply chain authenticity through precise genetic analysis and immutable data storage.
Relevance to ALLIANCEThis pilot is linked to the ALLIANCE PDO/PGI extra virgin oil demonstrator [https://alliance-heu-project.eu/pilots/dna-blockchain], as it also employs DNA techniques for authentication and blockchain [https://alliance-heu-project.eu/sites/default/files/dissemination/ALLIANCE_Blockchain.pdf] for traceability, although it does not focus specifically on PDO/PGI certified products which are at the core of ALLIANCE.
